Explaining My Art
I drew this at a time where I thought my hands said more about myself than my face did.
I created this monotype while under the influence of Kandinsky's many Compositions, Impressions and Improvisations.
This drawing was inspired by Egon Schiele's Nude Man with Red Loincloth. I used imagination to give the man some legs and other details.
This painting is a visual metaphor for what women are and have been for thousands of years. The beauty of the rose is somewhat guarded and concealed by the lines and muted in a way that keeps it from being as beautiful as it could be. Underneath the painting, I layered article clippings from women's magazines about female genital mutilation, how to make manly drinks more feminine, how to please your man and so forth for texture as well as added symbolism. The dripped paint in the background symbolizes women's heartache in the form many of us have seen as tears.
I thought it would be funny to try to make a cockroach look glamourous. Whenever I showed someone this painting, they would react in a way that reflected their feelings of disgust in the insect. They looked like they wanted to squash the cockroach, and I felt bad because I put him in this situation. The hot pink background leaves little room for my little cockroach to hide.
